The Stoughton Area School District has issued a formal apology after it came to light that a teacher at Kegonsa Elementary School hung the American flag upside down in their classroom on Veterans’ Day. The district said it was an unacceptable oversight which in no way reflects their respect and honor for servicemembers, although questions have been raised if this was indeed an oversight or rather an intentional political statement on the part of the teacher. The district said they are taking steps to ensure it does not happen again.
It seems highly unlikely a teacher could unintentionally post the American flag upside down on Veterans Day or any other day for that matter. Such an action demands an appropriate consequence. The school should make it very clear to these impressionable elementary children that they do not approve of this offensive and disrespectful treatment of our nation’s flag.
