Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania have adopted institutional-neutrality policies in support of academic freedom and will no longer issue statements on events or controversies unless there is a direct bearing on the university’s functions, National Review reports. UPenn’s interim president stated, quote, “Although well-meaning, these institutional messages fundamentally compete with the free and unencumbered creation and expression of ideas by individuals,” end quote.

This is a refreshing move from two institutions that have finally realized issuing polarizing political statements does more harm than good for faculty, students, and the school’s reputation. Free speech is hindered when students and staff are scared to voice opinions that differ from the school’s. We hope others, such as the University of Wisconsin, soon adopt similar policies.
