Advocates from Wisconsin and elsewhere gathered on Capitol Hill earlier this week to deliver over four hundred thousand petitions urging Congress to pass the Right to Contraception Act. The tally includes over sixteen thousand from Wisconsin. The Right to Contraception Act would enshrine into federal law a so-called right for individuals to buy and use contraceptives, as well as for health care providers to provide them. In floor action Wednesday, Republican senators blocked this bill.
Here’s the wording of the bill: “The right to contraception is a fundamental right, central to an individual’s privacy, health, well-being, dignity, liberty, equality, and ability to participate in the social and economic life of the Nation.” Such wording shows an utter disregard for truth and presumes an ignorant American citizenry. Access to contraception is not a right.
