In late seventeen eighty-nine, President George Washington issued a Thanksgiving Proclamation, saying, in part, “Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the [twenty-sixth] day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be—That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks.” This is part of our national Thanksgiving DNA and a reminder of how great leaders lead.
Our Thanksgiving heritage is indeed rich! As we gather with friends and loved ones today and rehearse God’s blessings and give thanks to Him for our families, for the freedoms we enjoy, and much more, may we also thank Him for leaders who have recognized that God is the giver of all we enjoy. From all of us at Wisconsin Family Council, Happy Thanksgiving!
