A lawsuit filed in Dane County Circuit Court alleges two UW Hospital surgeons performed so-called “gender-affirming” surgeries on a young woman without informed consent. According to the lawsuit, one doctor performed a hysterectomy on the patient when she was nineteen, and another performed a double mastectomy on her when she was twenty-one. While in her late teens, the woman diagnosed herself with gender dysphoria. The suit also alleges malpractice and negligence by the hospital as well as other allegations.
This is a significant lawsuit. Informed consent means patients have sufficient information prior to a procedure so they understand what is going to happen and the results. This young woman, among other claims, says she was never told she would be permanently unable to bear children. Imagine the ignorance of minors who undergo these procedures.
