Last year the US Supreme Court sided with Coach Joe Kennedy in a religious freedom case involving his employment at a public high school. The coach had been fired for praying on the football field after a game. The Washington State school district ultimately rehired Coach Kennedy this past spring. The Daily Signal reports he coached one game earlier this month and then resigned. His attorneys at First Liberty Institute say they are investigating reports of “retaliation” against the coach to determine if further legal action is necessary.
I think the takeaway on this sad situation is that the fight for religious freedom is ongoing. Those opposed in particular to Christianity are determined it will not have a dominant place in the public arena. We need to continue to show up, speak up and stand up whenever this foundational freedom is threatened.
