Alcohol consumption in Wisconsin has unfortunately become part of the state’s culture. A recent report identifies Milwaukee as the drunkest city in America. Many other reports put multiple Wisconsin cities in the top ten of cities with the most excessive drinking. A contributing factor is the low tax rate our state has on alcohol. It’s one of the lowest rates in the country and makes retail and wholesale prices lower. Making it easier for more people to purchase it.
Our largest city has severe economic, education, crime, drug, and incarceration issues, creating more single-parent families in a city already badly suffering from family breakdown. Alcohol adds fuel to this fire. If raising the tax on alcohol would help reduce alcohol consumption, then we need to do that.
