The founders wisely gave us a Republic, an incredible form of representative government that recognizes that “we the people” are, or should be, the final authority. Wisconsin functions as a “mini-Republic” within the greater national Republic. The key to retaining this relatively fragile form of government at the state and national level is for “we the people” to be informed and involved, which includes voting in a knowledgeable and responsible way and also passing on to the next generation an understanding of the blessing and responsibility of being an American.
With tomorrow’s election, today is a great opportunity for families to talk about the founding of our country, about the framework of our government, and about how important voting is in perpetuating and preserving our nation and our freedom. This would make a great family dinner discussion tonight!
