Earlier this week South Dakota State Rep. Erin Healy tweeted, “Extremist group Family Heritage Alliance said this morning that the safest place for kids are in families that have a married mom and dad. What a dangerous and un-American belief.” The tweet was apparently in reaction to comments against a bill that would remove sex-specific language from South Dakota’s legal definition of marriage. The bill failed.
This is one of those jaw-dropping statements that we find hard to believe someone would actually say. Fortunately, sane and informed people responded to this insane tweet, letting this legislator know the truth in no uncertain terms—that intact married families are indeed the best and safest place for children. What’s dangerous and un-American is believing otherwise.
