The crowd had gathered from what seemed like everywhere. The city was straining under the weight of all of their needs. This particular night, the crowds were packed inside, outside, and everywhere near the temple. They had come to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. So here they were, gathered to remember when God faithfully led them as a pillar of fire and protected them. And as they lit the great candelabra, the light streamed throughout the temple. You could hear the voice of Jesus over the incredible hush saying, “I am the light of the world. If you follow Me, you will not stumble through the darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” What a statement! He was telling them that He was the One who kept them safe in the wilderness. And the same powerful God has offered us rescue from our sins and eternal death.
