I remember as a child watching Gilligan’s Island when a robber landed on the island, pointed a gun at the wealthy Thurston Howl III, and said, “This is a stick up. It’s your money or your life.” When Mr. Howl didn’t respond, the robber asked what he was waiting on. Mr. Howl replied, “I’m still trying to decide.”
Since I haven’t owned a TV for the past 30 years, it’s been a long time since I saw that. So why do I still remember it? Maybe it’s because it captured, in a funny way, the dilemma we constantly face of choosing between our money and our life.
Every day, we make decisions about how much time we will exchange that day for money. Unfortunately, it’s easy to think like Mr. Howl and tilt toward the money.
But Jesus warned that no man can serve both God and money. When forced to choose between your money and your life, tilt toward life, and you’ll redeem the time.
