When I was about five years old the little girl down the street set up a store in her back yard. My mother gave me a nickel to spend and I noticed a rock on her store table and asked why she was selling a rock. Robin then explained to me that it wasn’t a rock it was a paperweight. So I gave her my nickel and took it home to show mom.
But instead of being delighted with my wise purchase, mother explained it wasn’t a paperweight, but a rock. She then gave me a lecture about what a foolish thing I had done spending my father’s hard earned money on a rock.
I learned that day the value of a coin. Poet Carl Sandburg said, “Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.”
That’s good counsel for redeeming the time.
