Many of us spend a lot of time reading and listening to the news. Every Christian has a responsibility to know what is going on in the world around him. There’s nothing spiritual about being ignorant of current events.
But, like anything else, news consumption must be done with a purpose in mind. When you read news stories, ask God what He wants you to do as a result of what you just learned. Some stories may stir compassion in you and make you want to send help to those in need. Other stories may help you determine the candidate in the next election that would best reflect your Christian values.
Another thing many news stories can do is give you a reason to pray. Whether it’s the latest conflict in the Middle East, or a local family who lost their home to a fire, the newspaper can become your daily prayer bulletin.
Remember, turning news time into prayer time will redeem the time.
