They are in the heavenlies. 2 Corinthians 5 says that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
Those people who died, not knowing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, go to Hades, a holding place for all lost people. They will be resurrected at the second resurrection (Revelation 20:11-15) when they will be taken into the presence of Jesus at the Great White Throne Judgment to be sentenced forever into the Lake of Fire.
People who die in Christ will be caught up to be with Him, and their bodies’ will be changed into glorified bodies. The soul and spirit that are already in the heavenlies will be brought back together with that body.
