Welcome to Prophecy Q & A with Jimmy DeYoung!
I cannot exegete the Scripture and say that the Catholic Church is that which is talked about in Revelation 17. I cannot blatantly say that it is the Catholic Church.
Revelation 17:5 talks about Babylon, the mother of harlots, the mother of all false religion.
Genesis 11:4 states that when Nimrod built that great city called Babel or Babylon, he said, “Let’s build a tower whose top may reach into heaven. Let’s make us a name lest we be scattered upon the face of the earth.” He was not talking about a name of popularity but the name of another god, a god that they could control. They didn’t like Yahweh. Nimrod was building a kingdom; he had one great city and everybody was going to live there. He then established a religion with his wife and son – a mother/son cult headquartered in Babylon for a number of years, but later moved to Pergamus. In Pergamus, there are statues of the Caesars. They had the political title of Caesar, but they also had the religious title of Pontifex Maximus, which means major keeper of the bridge. It was later shortened to Pontiff and then shortened to Pope. These Caesars, who had dual responsibility (political and religious), would wear fish-shaped hats, purple and scarlet, had a convent of virgins, had a priest serving them, would carry a challis full of blood, and would carry a diamond and pearl cross. They operated this way until the fall of the Roman Empire. Then, everything moved to Rome, Italy.
Revelation 17 says that this false church wears scarlet and purple outfits, carries a challis full of blood, and has a cross made out of diamonds and pearls. I can’t exegete the word Catholic, but there will come a false church to power and will be headquartered in the city of Rome in the first three and half years of the Tribulation period.
