We’ve had some short readings and some long readings – for the next few days, we’re going to look at some promises of prayer.
Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
John 15:15-16
The creation of God – us – is promoted. In Genesis 2:7 we went from dirt to a man. Here we go from a servant to a friend.
I just read a biography of a developer in Houston that was into helicopter skiing. He would go up in a helicopter, and jump out onto a mountain top that was otherwise inaccessible, and ski downhill. He and his wife had a house party and invited some of the ski instructors over to their lodge. One of the ski instructors said she was one of the thousands who worked for the developer’s company, but she had never been to his house as just another employee. Once she had left the job and pursued her passion of skiing, she was surprised to be invited to her former boss’s house as a friend.
That’s a picture of what Jesus is saying. We’re no longer just employees way down the totem pole, gossipping about what the rich boss’s life might be like. We’re His friends – invited to His home!
And as friends we’re equipped with the authority to ask of our Friend whatsoever we need for the task He has asked of us!
What do we need from Him to accomplish the task of bearing fruit?
