Defeating New Atheism in America

On behalf of our Phyllis Schlafly Eagles family, may I wish you a Happy Easter! This weekend, Christendom will celebrate the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, whose death, burial, and resurrection pave the way for our restoration to God. May these days be filled not only with time well spent with family and friends, but also filled with joy in the finished work of Christ.

This is an exciting weekend to consider major cultural shifts in America, or more broadly in the West. You may recall in these broadcasts last month, we reported on a major uptick in Bible sales last year as well as a host of new and very unlikely voices bringing our cultural and political conversations around to faith in the Bible and Christianity. The bottom line underneath these recent headlines leads us to one conclusion: that the new secularist movement of the 20th and 21st centuries has had its moment and has left people wanting more out of life.

We’ve seen devout atheists like Richard Dawkins and Joe Rogan take sharp turns toward a more questioning agnosticism, while some of the more open-minded seekers and agnostics have decided to embrace Christianity. There are even more names added to this list than when we last covered the topic, notably in “skeptical philosopher” and Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s ex-running mate Nicole Shanahan. Both of these very unlikely sources now proclaim a born-again Christian faith. Couple these testimonies with the surge in faith-based values in the political arena and even revivals breaking out at college campuses like the football team at Ohio State has experienced — I’d say we’re squarely in the middle of a revitalizing moment for the faith that is responsible for building Western Civilization.

The postmodern world of secularism has failed to satisfy humanity or build the utopian future it promised. This is a moment for the Church to be prepared, get to work, and be reminded that God’s Word will not return void, even if it returns in the unlikeliest of forms.
