Non-Citizen Counting May Change the Race to 270

Many victory laps have been run and much crow has been eaten as Americans have faced the reality of the election results against their predictions, but one fact still remains: building your own map to reach 270 electoral votes is a great lesson in American civics. Another factor that I hope receives as much, if not more, attention in the next 6 years is that of the U.S. Census and our congressional apportionment.

You may recall a big dust-up over the 2020 Census and a so-called “citizenship question.” Folks inside the Trump administration fought to ensure our national counting included whether someone was a citizen of the United States. Why? The number of congressional districts in each state (and therefore the number of electoral votes each state receives in the Electoral College) is determined by the apportionment of citizens throughout the 50 states. This is why we experience “redistricting” every ten years, and the loss or gain of congressional districts in some states. The key in all of this, however, is that this apportionment must only be done according to only U.S. citizens, not legal residents or visitors.

According to current forecasts, blue states like California and New York are on track to lose several seats, while red states like Texas and Florida will gain. On its face, this may seem like a certain GOP victory in the 2032 electoral college, but our urgency should be in keeping the census count and reapportionment focused on citizenship. The left would love nothing more than to illegally count non-citizens in a bid to keep electoral votes in failing big blue states. A vital part of securing elections as we move forward is to count only U.S. citizens in our census and congressional reapportionment. There is no doubt that the left’s plan to meddle in elections is not simply casting illegal votes but counting illegal voters.
