The New German Totalitarianism

A recent poll in Germany has exposed a glaring rift between the will of the people and their detached ruling class. According to the Insa Opinion Research Institute, over two-thirds of Germans favor peace talks with Russia to end the Ukraine war. This sentiment is especially strong among voters of Sahra Wagenknecht’s BSW Alliance and the AfD, with 87 and 82 percent support, respectively. Even Green Party voters, traditionally pro-war under the guise of humanitarianism, are showing cracks in the narrative, with 59 percent backing diplomacy over endless arms shipments. Yet, the German government, led by ideologues like Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, remains tone-deaf, continuing its reckless push for war. Baerbock, in a stunning display of elitist arrogance, even declared she would support Ukraine “no matter what my German voters think.”

Former German leaders like Willy Brandt and Helmut Schmidt understood the importance of national interest. They pursued pragmatic diplomacy with the East while securing Germany’s prosperity. Those days are long gone. As Srdja Trifkovic rightly observes in Chronicles, the modern German elite has replaced the art of statecraft with the “dictatorship of good feelings,” a regime where moral posturing takes precedence over national survival. Merkel’s open borders policy demonstrates this well.

Today, Germany’s political class has turned its back on the German people while actively suppressing dissent. The German government recently banned the conservative magazine Compact, citing the flimsy excuse of “inciting hatred.” The German government is more concerned with conservative opinions than the radical Islamists invading their country.

Germany has replaced Nazi totalitarianism with liberal totalitarianism. These elites force globalism, open borders, and woke ideology, silencing any contrary opinions. Germany will lose both its national identity and its future if it continues down this path. The same moral absolutism that once destroyed Europe now threatens to do so again, but this time under the banner of “progress.”
