Evangelicals Have Been Tricked on Immigration

In The Federalist, Megan Basham exposes a profound disconnect between evangelical leadership and their grassroots followers. Basham reveals how organizations like the Evangelical Immigration Table (EIT) have co-opted Christian teachings to push for open-border policies and amnesty for illegal immigrants. All the while they disregard the devastating consequences these policies have on American families.

She shares the story of Maureen Maloney, whose son was killed by an illegal immigrant. Despite her devastating loss, Maloney sees no compassion or outreach from evangelical groups that champion immigration reform under the guise of Christian charity. Maloney criticized these leaders for “cherry-picking Scripture” to justify policies that, in reality, incentivize illegal immigration and undermine the rule of law. Christian institutions are “aiding and abetting illegal immigration” by promoting dangerous journeys to the U.S. border is a stark indictment of these so-called religious leaders.

EIT is a front group for left-wing agendas funded by billionaire George Soros. The EIT’s true purpose is not to minister to immigrants but to mobilize evangelical support for specific legislative agendas, such as the notorious Gang of Eight bill. This bill, which would have granted citizenship to nearly 11 million illegal immigrants, was heavily pushed by the EIT, despite overwhelming opposition from the very evangelicals they claimed to represent.

Polls at the time showed that evangelicals preferred, Basham states, “better border security” over “creating a path to citizenship” by a ratio of nearly three to one. Yet EIT falsely claims to speak for them.

Evangelical leaders have misused their platforms and betrayed their flocks. By prioritizing radical immigration reform over the safety and well-being of American citizens, these leaders have not only distorted the Christian message but have also aligned themselves with secular, left-wing interests that are at odds with Christian values.
