But What Can I Do?

It’s easy to feel hopeless or useless when you pay attention to politics. There is so much going on at the national level, and it seems like there is nothing you can do except wait to vote. But there are things you can do and ways to get involved. Phyllis Schlafly gave practical advice on how to get involved in politics and make an impact.

The first thing you can do to make a difference is focus on your family. If you’re married, make sure that relationship is number one, and then get closer to your children. Pray as a family and spend time together. Phyllis also emphasized how important it was to give moral guidance to your children and plan family activities.

You can also make an impact in your community. Discuss the important issues with your friends and neighbors, but always be reasonable and fact-based. Attend community civic meetings and speak up whenever the opportunity arises.

You can make an impact in the legislative process. Of course, you should be registered to vote. Also, learn the names of your state and national elected officials. Find out what district you live in and who represents you. Once you know this information, Phyllis recommends that you write or call their offices about the issues important to you. This is essential because they need to know what issues are important to you so that they can represent you.

Finally, you can make an impact with the media. Write letters to the editor of your local newspaper. Be brief and to the point. Write letters to the local TV stations, or even the national ones. It cannot hurt to get your voice out there, especially if you are being respectful, reasonable, and factual.

There are many ways to make an impact, so get out there and make one.
