Experience the American dream with today’s Patriot of the Past interview. I’m your host, John Gillespie.
It’s October 7, 1780. I’m in South Carolina with 16-year-old Patriot soldier, James Collins.
JG: “James, what was the attack on the British like?”
JC: “Mr. Gillespie, we attempted to climb the hill, but the Redcoats charged upon us fiercely and forced us to fall back. We tried a second time, and then a third, until we finally broke through and the Brits gave way and we won the day.”
The young patriots did win the day as they killed or captured over 1,000 British troops at Kings Mountain, thus securing the southern colonies’ ability to continue the fight for liberty.

John and Jan Gillespie are the founders of the Rawhide Boys’ Ranch; they have fostered 351 teenagers and wrote the book Our 351 Sons; they have also assisted numerous churches in developing youth programs and expanding their total church ministries. After running for U.S. Senate, John founded 1776 American Dream, which exists to demonstrate the vision of our founding fathers and help our generation of youth passionately embrace those values.
