Rebecca Motte – May 7, 1781

Experience the American dream with today’s Patriot of the Past interview. I’m your host, John Gillespie.

It’s May 7, 1781. I’m near Charleston, South Carolina, with Rebecca Motte. We’re watching as her beautiful mansion is on fire.

JG: “Mrs. Motte, how did this happen?”

RM: “Mr. Gillespie, when the Redcoats took my mansion from the Patriots, they kicked me out. So I took some fire arrows, and told the Yanks, “Let’s get her back!”

And get her back they did, as the Patriots recaptured Rebecca’s mansion and saved the house, using it as headquarters to fight for the cause of freedom.
