It’s June 7, 1776. I’m in Philadelphia. The Continental Congress is preparing to vote for independence. Richard Henry Lee of Virginia is introducing an independence resolution.
RHL: “Be it resolved that these united colonies are of right and ought to be free and independent states, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British crown, and that all political connection between them and the state of Great Britain is and ought to be totally dissolved.”
The Continental Congress went on to create the Declaration of Independence and freedom for America.
