Luther Martin – June 19, 1787

Experience the American dream with today’s Patriot of the Past interview. I’m your host, John Gillespie.

It’s June 19, 1787. I’m at the Constitutional Convention with Maryland representative Luther Martin.

JG: “Mr. Martin, why are you so upset?”

LM: “Mr. Gillespie, how dare some of the members of this convention charge that Maryland is not a sovereign state! I will never tire over defending the God-given sovereign rights of the states. Beware of a too-big federal government.”

Known as a tireless champion of the sovereignty of the states, Luther Martin helped assure the inclusion of the Bill of Rights in the Constitution.
