John Andre – October 2, 1780

Experience the American dream with today’s Patriot of the Past interview. I’m your host, John Gillespie.

It’s October 2, 1780. I’m near Tarrytown, New York, where Major John Andre, aide-de-camp to British General Henry Clinton, will be executed.

JG: “Major Andre, General Washington has agonized over his decision to have you executed. What do you have to say?”

JA: “Mr. Gillespie, I’m ready to die for my king, and I forgive General Washington for his loyalty to America.”

Major Andre was hanged as a spy by the Continental Army for delivering the messages of the traitor Benedict Arnold.
