Experience the American dream with today’s Patriot of the Past interview. I’m your host, John Gillespie.
It’s April 30, 1778. I’m in General Washington’s headquarters, and we’re thanking God that the American army has survived five horrid winter months at Valley Forge. We hear a horse approaching at a full gallop. Why, it’s Marquis de Lafayette!
MDL: “General Washington, Ambassador Franklin has just signed a treaty of alliance with France! They recognize the independence of the United States! Oh, General Washington! Viva la France! Viva la America!”
Never before and never after would an officer in General Washington’s army approach him in such a casual and intimate manner, but then the victory for American liberty was well worth a kiss or two!

John and Jan Gillespie are the founders of the Rawhide Boys’ Ranch; they have fostered 351 teenagers and wrote the book Our 351 Sons; they have also assisted numerous churches in developing youth programs and expanding their total church ministries. After running for U.S. Senate, John founded 1776 American Dream, which exists to demonstrate the vision of our founding fathers and help our generation of youth passionately embrace those values.
