Dolley Madison – August 24, 1814

Experience the American dream with today’s Patriot of the Past interview. I’m your host, John Gillespie.

It’s August 24, 1814. I’m in the White House, and the British army is attacking the Capitol. The First Lady, Dolley Madison, is giving orders to take a painting of George Washington off the wall, and she’s packing important papers.

JG: “Mrs. Madison, where will you go?”

DM: “Mr. Gillespie, I will find my husband, and then we will do what we can to get the people’s house back.”

The American army and navy soon defeated the British Empire for a second time and did get the White House back.
