George Washington – December 14, 1799

Experience the American dream with today’s Patriot of the Past interview. I’m your host, John Gillespie.

It’s December 14, 1799. This Christmas holiday is saddened with the news that President George Washington has died today. I’m in Philadelphia at Christ Church. Washington’s pew is draped in black. I’m with some of his colleagues.

JG: “Mr. Henry Lee, what are your thoughts?”

HL: “He was first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen. “

JG: “Mr. Fisher Ames. What can you add about our president?”

FA: “He has changed mankind’s ideas of political greatness,.”

Washington’s integrity and courage provided our experiment in democracy with a leader to help it succeed.
