George Washington – January 1, 1796

Experience the American dream with today’s Patriot of the Past interview. I’m your host, John Gillespie.

It’s January 1, 1796. I’m with President George Washington and the Minister of France.

GW: “Monsieur, it is my purest wish to the Supreme Being, that the citizens of our sister Republic, our magnanimous ally, may soon enjoy in peace that Liberty which they have purchased at so great a price.”

MINISTER OF FRANCE: “Merci beaucoup, Mr. President. We admire your love of liberty and respect of life and your pursuit of freedom.”

While President Washington did show respect for France, he had certain concerns about the violence of the French Revolution.
