It’s December 12, 1781. I’m in the study of Reverend James Caldwell. He’s preparing his Christmas sermon on God’s presence in the victory of the American Revolution.
JG: “Reverend Caldwell, what are you writing?”
JC: “Mr. Gillespie, I remember back when we were in battle, and we ran out of musket paper wadding to hold the powder and ball in place. We gathered up all our Watts hymnals, tore the pages out, and I yelled, ‘Put Watts into ’em boys! Give ’em Watts!'”
And “Give ’em Watts” they did, as they soundly defeated British General Clinton’s army.
