It’s June 28, 1780. I’m in Charleston, South Carolina, with Patriot Martha Bratton.
JG: “Martha, what are you doing?”
MB: “Shh! John, I’m laying a trail of gunpowder to the redcoats’ ammunition supply depot. Look out! I’m lighting it. Run, John, run!”
JG: “Whoa! Martha, you blew up the whole warehouse!”
Martha was captured and, eventually, let go by a kind British officer. Later, that kind officer was captured. Martha persuaded the American officers not to hang him.
