It’s October 8, 1775. I’m riding back to South Carolina with John Rutledge, a vociferous member of the Continental Congress.
JG: “Mr. Rutledge, why are you in such a hurry?”
JR: “John, the king refuses to reason with us. We have time and time again pleaded and petitioned him to compromise, yet, he ignores our overtures. Now, we must prepare for war.”
John Rutledge went on to write the Constitution of South Carolina and help frame the U.S. Constitution.
