It’s June 18, 1775. I’m at John and Abigail Adams’ farm in Braintree, Massachusetts. John has been gone several months to Philadelphia, serving in the Second Continental Congress. Abigail has been running the farm plus caring for their four children.
JG: “Abigail, how are you getting along?”
AA: “These are difficult times. Yesterday, I watched the smoke rising above Charlestown from the Battle of Bunker Hill, but, like Nehemiah, having made our prayers to God, we face the future unafraid.”
We talk much about the sacrifice made by our founding fathers, but we should be aware that the wives, mothers, and women who also demanded freedom for America made sacrifices just as great.
