Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope!
I’m Carl Kerby, and we’re talking about Australian Brush Turkey.
This last amazing fact takes the cake. According to many farmers, this bird has the ability to predict the amount of rainfall in an upcoming season.
One farmer explains how they watch where the Brush Turkey builds their nests to help them plant their crops.
If the nests are close to the creeks, it’s going to be a dry year. If the nests are built high up on the ridges, they can expect to have a very wet year.
By knowing that it’s going to be a dry year, they prepare the ground sooner so as to catch and store any potential rainfall.
If it’s a wet year, they’ll plant their crops earlier so they’ll be established before the rainfall comes.
One family has been farming since 1908 and has been observing the Brush Turkey from the very start. The Brush Turkey helps them decide when to plant their crops. They say that 6 weeks after the bird starts scratching, the rains will fall.
They actually use the birds over what they see on the internet!
Amazing!
I hope you enjoyed learning about the Australian Brush Turkey, and I hope to see you in the next Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope.
