Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope!
I’m Carl Kerby. We’re talking about the Australian Brush Turkey and their amazing eggs!
First of all, the variation in egg size of the Brush Turkey is unique. Their eggs can be anywhere from 4 to almost 9 ounces. That means that the largest egg can be more than two times the size of the smallest egg. There are very few birds that have that much variation in their egg size.
Another unique feature is the air holes in their eggshell. These air holes are shaped like an ice cream cone with the largest opening on the outside of the shell and the narrower opening on the inside of the shell.
So, why is this important?
Well, think of it this way. If we have a room with no air conditioning that holds 50 people and there are 10 in there, the temperature won’t be too bad.
But, what if we put 50 people in there, what’s going to happen to the temperature? That’s right, it’s going to get hot. So how do the air holes in the eggshell help with that problem?
That’s a really good question, but we’ll have to talk about that in the next Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope.
Until then … stay bold!
