Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope!
I’m Carl Kerby. We’re talking about the Australian Brush Turkey, and why their nest is so big.
One reason is because these birds have to keep the temperature between 91.4 to 95 degrees. This requires a lot of rotting material! If the temperature’s off just a little bit, the eggs won’t hatch.
And if that happened, that would mean this megapode misappropriated their muscle moiling this monstrous mound of moldering mulch.
Say what? That just means they wasted their time, and they won’t do that!
So God has uniquely equipped this bird to tell the temperature inside the nest. How they do it, we’re not sure! But, if the nest is too hot or cold, they make adjustments to fix the problem.
Another reason it’s so big is because of the number of eggs it’ll hold. If the nest was made correctly, the male will end up with 40 to 150 eggs being incubated in there.
Moms just lay the eggs and then leave. Daddy stays with the eggs, protecting them and keeping the temperature just right!
We still have a problem, and that’s with the egg itself. But our time is up, so we’ll talk about that in the next Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope.
Until then … stay bold!
