Fast Facts: Birds (Part 1)

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope!

I’m Carl Kerby.

This time we’re talking about an animal that lives over the entire planet and has over 9,000 species. That’s right … it’s birds!  Fact is, they’re one of God’s most amazing creations.

The largest living bird is the ostrich, but it’s not even close to the largest bird that has ever lived. That honor goes to the humongous Elephant Bird, which went extinct 400 years ago and weighed about 1,000 pounds.

Today, the largest egg belongs to the ostrich; it weighs in at an amazing 3 pounds and is 7 inches long.  But you could put seven ostrich eggs inside of a single Elephant Bird egg.

The smallest egg is laid by the Bee Hummingbird.  Their eggs weigh a mere .02 ounces.  That means you could put 2,400 of their eggs in a single ostrich egg.  Wow!

Birds can fly at speeds … ooops … our time’s up, so we’ll talk about that in the next Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope.  Until then … stay bold!
