Fast Facts: Cheetah (Part 4)

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope!

I’m Carl Kerby.

Today, we’re talking about the mighty cheetah who despite its size can’t roar. Instead, it purrs and chirps to communicate.

That’s not the only thing that sets this guy apart – unlike most big cats, the cheetah actually has terrible night vision, but it has excellent eyesight when it hunts in the early morning or late afternoon. During those times, it can see up to 3 miles away!

And what magnificent hunters they are! To conserve energy, the cheetah creeps close to its prey before bursting into a top speed of up to 60 miles-per-hour for the catch. As it stretches out to trip its prey, it will suffocate the prey by clamping down on its windpipe with a strong vise-like grip of the jaw.  Sin has sure destroyed this once-perfect world!

It takes 30 minutes for the cheetah to recover from the hunt, but then the cheetah eats extremely quickly to avoid predators.

There’s one more feature that I think you’ll find interesting, and we’ll talk about it next time.

Until then … stay bold!
