Fast Facts: Butterfly (Part 2)

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope!

I’m Carl Kerby, and we’re talking about butterflies.

Now, most people know that a butterfly starts off as a caterpillar, which is an insanely interesting creature in itself!

Did you know that a caterpillar eats 7 times its weight every day for 12 days?  That’s 3,000 times its birth weight!  If an 8 lb baby did the same, it would have to eat 168,000 Big Macs!

We’re talking about an exceptionally elite eating machine.  It’s basically a stomach with jaws and legs.

That makes the Nathan’s Hot Dog eating champion look like a lightweight!

It eats so fast and furiously that it literally outgrows its skin 4-5 times during its super-short life.  When the eating is over, it sheds its skin one last time and hangs from a leaf. While hanging there, it forms a chrysalis and melts into a gelatinous goo.

Fact is … there’s no greater mystery in nature than a caterpillar turning into soup, then turning into a butterfly. We’ll talk more about this amazing creature in another Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope.

Until then … stay bold!
