Fast Facts: Giraffe (Part 2)

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope!

I’m Carl Kerby, and we’re talking about the giraffe.

Have you ever heard this one, “What’s worse than a centipede with sore feet?”  That’s right, a giraffe with a sore throat!

I know … I know … corny!  The giraffe’s neck isn’t a joke though!

So, why 7 neck bones?

Simple, if they had more there’d be problems.  It takes 600 pounds of muscles to make those bones work.

If they had 14 neck bones … get the picture?

A 1,200-pound neck won’t work!  They’d walk around with their tail sticking up in the air!

Hey, what if they had 3 neck bones?  Less weight, more maneuverable, right?

Wrong!  A bull giraffe loves “necking!”  Don’t worry parents, this is a family program, it’s safe.

Giraffe “necking” is dangerous.  They literally “whack” each other with their heads using their neck like a whip.  With 3 neck bones, their necks would break, and they would die while “necking”!

Hmmm! Parents, we could use that with our children, “Don’t start necking or you could die like the giraffe!”  I’m just sayin’!

By the way, don’t they get tired holding that neck up all day long?

Sorry, we’re out of time so we’ll have to talk about that in the next Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope.

Until then … stay bold!
