Fast Facts: Frogs (Part 6)

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope!

I’m Carl Kerby and we’re talking about Darwin’s Frog.  With a name like that you know it’s gotta’ be good, and I think you’ll agree that it is.

At one and a half inches, they’re not very big, but you’ve heard the saying, “Good things come in small packages.”  Man, is that true for this tiny frog!

To me, their most amazing feature is the way that daddy takes care of the babies!

There’s no puddles of water where they live so Momma’ frog lays about 40 eggs in rotting plant material.  Daddy will protect them as they develop for about 3 to 4 weeks.  As soon as the babies start to move inside the eggs, daddy frog swallows them!

You heard that right, he swallows them, but not into his stomach.  He has a special pouch by his vocal chords where he holds them as they develop into fully mature frogs.  When finished with this process, they literally jump out of dad’s mouth!  Amazing!

Man, I love frogs!  I hope to see you next time with more fun information about God’s wonderful creation.  Until then . . . stay bold!
