Fast Facts: Frogs (Part 3)

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope!

I’m Carl Kerby and we’re talking about … the “Common Wood Frog.”

Trust me when I say what it can do is NOT that common.

This frog is found all over North America, including Alaska.  This means it has to survive COLD weather.

How they do it sounds like something out of a Science Fiction novel.  Their body actually produces “anti-freeze!”

No joke.

When they begin to freeze, ice sucks water out of their cells, which would kill them if their liver didn’t produce large amounts of sugar. The sugar mixes with their urine, and the entire mixture ends up in their blood system, protecting them from becoming dehydrated and completely frozen.

Up to 65% of their body can be frozen during the winter and they’ll still survive.  Believe it or not, they can still get frostbite like you and me and die!

Eight months later the sun comes out, the frog thaws, and away they go.  Now that’s an unbelievable design!

There are even more amazing frogs, but they’ll have to wait until next time.

Until then … stay bold!
