Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope. I’m Carl Kerby, and we’re back on the cuttlefish.
While you may not have much of a taste for the cuttlefish, chances are your pet birds do. If you have a pet bird, more than likely you’ve fed it cuttlebone, whether you realized it or not! You see, cuttlebone comes from the cuttlefish … and it is often used in bird cages. The bird plays with the cuttlebone, and, as it does, it hones its beak. It’s also a good source of calcium for the bird.
Birds are not the only ones who like cuttlebone. Other animals benefit from it, too, and jewelers have also found uses for it in their craft. Of course, the first creature to benefit from that cuttlebone is the cuttlefish itself. It’s this shell inside the cuttlefish (which holds water and gas) that allows it to do so many incredible feats.
Fact is, did you know … that we’re out of time for now! Join us on the next Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope for one last look at the cuttlefish. Until then, stay bold!
