Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope. I’m Carl Kerby.
Snuggle in close as we talk about the cute and cuddly baby panda. When these guys are born, they’re about the size of a stick of butter and weigh about 3-5 ounces. Believe it or not, they’re born hairless, blind, and completely helpless. Although mom weighs 900 times more than her baby, she’ll gently cradle and care for this tiny cub continuously, not even leaving her bamboo den to eat or drink.
By three months old, the tiny cub has opened his eyes, he’s teething, and he’s started to crawl around. That’s when the fun begins. As he ventures outside the den, mom has to keep her clumsy cub from tripping, falling, and rolling away as he explores his surroundings.
By the time he’s six months old, he’ll start eating bamboo and climbing trees like his parents. At one year, he’ll only weigh around 60 pounds.
Giant Pandas only have 5-8 cubs in their lifetime, so raising each one is critical.
Join us on the next Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope when we talk about their unique color. Until then, stay bold!
