Fast Facts: Pandas – Part III

Carl Kerby

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope. I’m Carl Kerby.

Today, we’re talking about my favorite subject – food! But this food isn’t for you or me, unfortunately; it’s for the Giant Panda. We’re talking bamboo. This low nutrition, fibrous stalk is a favorite of these creatures – and that’s why God gave them such unique features.

Sitting upright while eating, the Giant Panda will use his five fingers and specially padded wrist bone to tightly grip and manipulate the bamboo. His sharp canines then peel the rough outer stalk of the bamboo in just seconds. With strong jawbones, cheek muscles, and large flat molars, he will crush and grind the bamboo before it’s swallowed.

God has uniquely designed his stomach to be lined with a thick mucus in order to prevent it from being damaged by splinters. Ouch! That would definitely hurt if it happened! It doesn’t, however, because of a perfect combination of designs.

Check our next Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope when we snuggle up with one of the baby pandas. Until then, stay bold!
