There continues to be a debate waged over whether or not the United States is, or ever was, a Christian nation. Some insist that the Bible or Christianity should have no part in our government as they scream, “Separation of church and state!” Some take this so far as to believe Christians should have no voice whatsoever in government. Still others claim Christians shouldn’t vote at all since the Bible teaches that believers are citizens of heaven.
So what about God and country? Are they compatible with one another? Does a believer in Christ have to choose between patriotism and Christianity? What is the responsibility of believers to our nation?
To answer such questions, Crosstalk welcomed Dr. Byron Foxx. Dr. Foxx is the founder and past president of Bible Truth Music serving many thousands of churches across the country. Dr. Foxx is also an evangelist who travels the nation holding God & Country Rallies.
Dr. Foxx noted that there’s four ways that God judges nations—by pestilence and disease, war, natural disaster, and by baseless leaders. He believes there’s no doubt that there’s a measure of God’s anger and wrath being currently poured out on America.
He mentioned how President Biden said in statements on his Twitter account that America is a nation of pride. Study the Bible and you’ll see that God hates pride. He warned listeners that we need to humble ourselves before God, repent of our sins, and get thoroughly right with God. It’s important to note, however, that he also said that as he travels, he’s noticed that God still has his people.
Dr. Foxx referenced the year 1900 as the time when things began to unravel in America. Up to this time, the Bible was integral to grade schools, high schools and even the colleges. Then you move to 1962-63 when we quit reading the Bible in schools, then prayer was stopped. In 1969 the Church of Satan obtained tax exempt status. In 1972, the unmentionable lifestyle was reclassified as something other than deviant behavior, and in 1973 we had the Roe v. Wade decision. In all this, we are reaping a harvest.
In spite of all this, can Christians be patriotic while at the same time give honor to God? Dr. Foxx answered that question as he worked his way through things to consider like the examples of Daniel and Nehemiah, how we should pray for government (particularly those leaders we don’t agree with), the importance of imprecatory and intercessory prayers, how believers can participate in government, the 5 principles that determine your vote, and more, including input from listeners across America.
