Few sections of the Bible have been as controversial and highly debated as that of Genesis 6:1-4 and the questions that arise including: Who were the sons of God? Who were the daughters of men? What do we make of the term ‘giants’ and ‘Nephilim’?
Tim Chaffey has conducted significant research into the various views surrounding this topic and he joined Jim to let listeners hear what he’s uncovered. His research is contained in his latest book, ‘Fallen: The Sons of God and the Nephilim.’
Tim is the director of Risen Ministries. He’s served in the position of a pastor and also a youth pastor. He is the author of nearly two dozen books including ‘Old Earth Creationism on Trial’, a Noah Trilogy: ‘Noah: Man of God,’ ‘Noah: Man of Resolve,’ ‘Noah: Man of Destiny.’ ‘In Defense of Easter’ and others. He is also a researcher and an apologist.
There have been numerous opinions from Christians down through the centuries as it relates to this topic. Tim gave a brief synopsis of the 3 major views at issue here which include:
The Sethite View—While diminishing a bit among scholarship, many people still hold to this view. It was the most dominant view in church history from about the 5th century until about 100 years ago. For Tim, its strength is that it doesn’t have to draw from very far outside the context although he also believes that it’s more of a negative reaction to the Fallen Angel View.
From there, Tim moved on to explain the Royalty (divine tyrant) View, then he described the Fallen Angel (divine being) View.
Why must we properly define the word ‘elohim’ when discussing this topic? What does Tim mean when he mentions the ‘divine council’ and how does it relate to this issue? These points and more were included in the broadcast and listeners brought their questions and views to Tim as well.
