It’s been calculated that 28% of Scripture was prophecy at the time it was written. That’s over one-fourth of the Bible. This includes 1,800 prophecies in Scripture taking up over 8,300 verses including 1,239 prophecies in the Old Testament and 578 in the New Testament. With so much Scripture devoted to the topic, don’t you think God put it there for a reason? Yet, we find the church sound asleep, oblivious to the fact that the bridegroom is coming for the bride.
Jeff Kinley is a graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary and has previously served as a pastor. He has a passion for sharing biblical truth. He is the author of over 20 books including the book that was discussed on this Crosstalk, ‘Wake the Bride‘ that is subtitled, ‘Facing These Last Days with Your Eyes Wide Open‘. This is a guide to the book of Revelation written to arouse a sleeping church and motivate her toward early awaiting and preparing for his coming.
As a bride gets ready for her wedding, she spends months in preparation. In other words, no bride would conceive of sleeping through wedding day or even being drowsy leading up to it. However, that picture of drowsiness is what we see from the church in the book of Revelation and that’s what we see today.
Jeff spoke about 2 Peter 3:1-13 where Peter notes that in the last days many will scoff at the idea of Christ returning for his bride. This is happening today from people both outside as well as inside the church. Some of the scoffing is due to over-speculation and the sensationalizing of the topic in order to manipulate the curiosity people may have surrounding the topic of Christ’s return.
What is the message of prophecy to the church today? Jeff referred to the Old Testament prophecies that pointed to the first coming of Christ which was meant to give hearers a sense of security and hope. He believes the prophecies that have yet to be fulfilled offer the same thing for people today as it strengthens our faith in Scripture.
He also noted how prophecy gives us a ‘heads up’ on what’s going to happen in the world. This means as Christians we have the answers to the questions that many people have such as, ‘Where’s the world headed?’
If you’ve had questions concerning the date of Christ’s return, the next prophetic event to come, the concept of a rapture, a judgment for believers, judgments on earth, the antichrist or those who claim they’ve been to heaven, this program provides the answers along with answers to questions from Crosstalk listeners.
