Among the recent headlines when this program first aired in September, a Kentucky State Trooper was shot and killed. By late morning it had been reported that Kentucky State Police had shot and killed the man suspected of murdering this trooper. This is just one of several incidents where one or more law enforcement offers were targeted.
Why all the rage against these public servants? Joining Jim to discuss this topic was Jim Kouri. Jim writes the Law Enforcement Examiner. He is the 5th Vice President and Public Information Officer of the National Association of Chiefs of Police and has served on the National Drug Task Force. He has trained police and security officers around the country.
Kouri began by noting that this idea of police being targeted because they’re cops has not been seen before. In the past such officers being killed in the line of duty usually involved isolated incidents with no connection between them. In the case of more recent incidents, he says there is a connection involving African Americans who are targeting/ambushing police due to racial discord.
Who’s to blame for this? Kouri points the finger at the media and the Obama administration for fueling the anti-police animosity. He detailed an incident involving a Cambridge professor who had forgotten his keys and was trying to open his door. Police officers questioned him about it and President Obama accused the officers of acting stupidly.
Kouri shares his thoughts on body cameras, the recruiting tactics and funding of the Black Lives Matter movement, how the current environment is affecting officer recruitment and the families of officers, what we can do to reverse anti-police attitudes and more.
